The answer

The husband's financial support for his wife is obligatory, even if she is wealthy. His inability to provide for her allows her to seek a divorce. A distinction should be made between two situations:

1. If the husband is experiencing financial hardship or difficulty after a period of ease, but he is still able to provide his wife with her daily sustenance, clothing, and a dwelling in a reasonable manner: She does not have the right to seek a divorce, based on the Almighty's saying: {Let a man of wealth spend from his wealth, and he whose provision is restricted - let him spend from what Allah has given him. Allah does not burden a soul beyond what He has given it. Allah will bring about ease after hardship.} It is part of good companionship for the wife to stand by her husband.

2. If the husband is in hardship and unable to provide the necessities for his wife (such as sustenance and clothing): Then she has the right to separate from him through divorce or annulment, based on the Almighty's saying: {Then retention with fairness or dismissal with kindness}, and the Prophet Muhammad's (peace be upon him) saying: "If a man is unable to provide for his wife's maintenance, they should be separated." In this situation, it is forbidden for the husband to hold her if she requests separation.
