Does a divorce take effect when a man says to his wife, "If you do not tell your father that I insulted him, then you are divorced, divorced," and the wife does not inform her father, knowing that the husband was angry and did not intend divorce? Can this be considered an oath, and can expiation be offered for it?

The majority of scholars hold that a conditional divorce occurs when the condition is met. However, Ibn Taymiyyah is of the view that it does not occur if the intention was to threaten or prevent, and that it can be expiated with an oath. Based on Ibn Taymiyyah's opinion, one can offer an expiation for an oath and not inform the wife of what was said. As for the opinion of the majority, which is the relied-upon view, the wife is divorced three times if she does not inform her father of what was said.
