Is singing prohibited according to the school of thought of Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal?

The ruling on singing depends on its type and what accompanies it. If it is accompanied by a musical instrument (other than the drum), or if it is women singing for non-mahram men, or if its lyrics contain anything forbidden, then it is haraam (forbidden). Anything other than that is mubaah (permissible), and it is recommended for women, especially at weddings. It is permissible for men to listen to it, but it is disliked to do so excessively. Most of the singing today is haraam due to its inclusion of impermissible elements according to Islamic law. The madhhab of Ahmad and other madhhabs agree on the prohibition of anything that includes forbidden content or is accompanied by musical instruments. Ahmad said, "I do not like singing because it cultivates hypocrisy in the heart." It is advisable to stay away from listening to songs and music.
