The question

Is there any evidence that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to turn the palm of his hand towards the ground when seeking refuge from the torment of Hell in supplication, and turn the palm of his hand towards the sky in other supplications?

The answer

In the supplication for averting calamities, such as drought, it is sunnah to raise the hands with the backs of the palms towards the sky. As for the supplication for seeking good, it is done by placing the insides of the palms towards the sky. Scholars have used as evidence the hadith narrated by Anas in Sahih Muslim that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, in the prayer for rain, "pointed with the backs of his palms towards the sky." There is no hadith reported specifically concerning seeking refuge from the torment of Hell.
