What is the ruling on working in a trade that involves selling notebooks with pictures of animate beings and music, cards with pictures of animate beings, playing cards, and razors, knowing that the questioner's primary work is in the field of legitimate, da'wah-oriented audio and video?

"Honoring one's parents is among the greatest acts of drawing closer to Allah. Therefore, strive to convince your father of your proficiency in your work, and search for a strong, trustworthy alternative for him in his trade. You could also bear some of his wages or dedicate a portion of your leisure time to accompany your father in his work and keep him company.

If you do not succeed, then take a leave from your current job to participate in your father's trade. If you are unable to do so, then you are not obligated to leave your job, your wealth, or your wife to please your parents if it causes you harm. This is not considered disobedience.

You should also mend your father's spirit and gladden his heart. Strive to purify your trade from selling forbidden items, and do not obey your father in selling what is forbidden, for "there is no obedience to a creature in disobedience to the Creator."

As for notebooks with photographic images, selling them is permissible as long as they are not pictures of women or obscene scenes.

However, selling music notebooks and shaving tools to someone you know will use them to shave his beard is forbidden, as it is assisting in evil.

Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen was asked about refraining from selling forbidden items in one's father's shop, and he replied that it is not considered disobedience. It is the son's duty to advise his father, and he should not sell what is used in forbidden acts."
