What should I do with my sister who does not pray, nor read the Quran, nor listen to it, and feels distressed when trying, and wishes for devotion, but does not find it?
Abandoning prayer is a grave sin and a serious transgression, greater than adultery, theft, drinking alcohol, and taking a life. Its perpetrator exposes himself to Allah's wrath and punishment, and many scholars deem him a disbeliever. Lack of devotion in prayer is not an excuse to abandon it; rather, it is a deception from Satan. Prayer performed without devotion is still valid and fulfills the obligation. She must hasten to sincere repentance and regret her sin, and know that death is near, and that beyond this life there is Paradise and Hell, and she must beware of Allah Almighty's wrath. We advise her to recite the Quran over herself, and there is no harm in seeking ruqyah from someone who performs it well and whose religiosity is trusted.
