The answer

The Hanafis and Hanbalis hold that zakat is obligatory on honey, and that the obligatory amount is one-tenth. However, they differed on the threshold at which zakat becomes obligatory. The Hanbalis believe that zakat is obligatory on every ten afraq (a farq is 16 Iraqi ratl), citing the action of Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, as evidence. Abu Hanifa, on the other hand, stated that one-tenth is obligatory on both small and large quantities, while Abu Yusuf said it is obligatory when it reaches five awsuq. Their basis for this is hadiths, including what Ibn Majah narrated from Abdullah ibn Amr and Ibn Khuzaymah from Banu Shababa, and what Al-Bayhaqi narrated from Abu Hurairah.

As for the Malikis and Shafi'is, they do not consider zakat obligatory on honey unless it is a trade commodity, arguing that there is no sound evidence to prove the obligation of zakat on it. This view is the most probable, as it has been reported from imams such as Al-Bukhari, Ibn al-Mundhir, and Ibn Abd al-Barr that nothing authentic exists regarding zakat on honey. The hadith narrated by Ibn Khuzaymah cannot be used as an argument for its obligation due to the possibility that what they paid to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was in exchange for his protection of their valleys. This is further supported by the action of Umar ibn al-Khattab with them.
