Is it obligatory for someone who picks up a golden cross to keep it in its original form to announce it, or should they break it and alter its features?

The found item, if it contains lawfully respected property, is preserved for its owner. The cross, when found, its shape holds no sanctity; rather, the consideration is for the respected financial value it possesses, which is the weight of the gold. One who breaks a cross is not liable for its craftsmanship. However, if one damages it, they are liable for its weight in gold, if it is made of gold, because disbelievers are addressed by the branches of Islamic law, and the prohibition is established for them. If the finder dismantles the cross or changes its shape, there is no liability upon him. He is not permitted to pick up the cross and keep it in its original form; rather, he must either leave it or pick it up and dismantle it, not keeping it in its original shape, based on the hadith of Aisha - may Allah be pleased with her - that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, "would not leave anything in his house that contained crosses except that he would dismantle it." Dismantling means changing its form or breaking it and nullifying its image.
