The question

Are the yellowish and brownish discharges during the period of purity considered najas (impure) requiring ghusl (full ritual bath), or is wudu (ablution) sufficient? And is seeing a light yellowish discharge after menstrual blood, while awaiting the "white discharge" (al-qassah al-bayda'), considered a delay in ghusl? What is the ruling on delaying ghusl until seeing it if it continues for up to ten days?

The answer

Yellowish and brownish discharges are types of blood and are impure (najis). This is indicated by what was reported in Al-Muwatta and Al-Bukhari from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that women used to send to her small boxes containing cotton pads with yellowish discharges from menstrual blood. She would say: "Do not be hasty until you see the white discharge."
