How did the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, purify himself, and how often per week?

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to perform ghusl (ritual bath) after janabah (state of ritual impurity requiring ghusl). He would begin by washing his hands, then pour water with his right hand onto his left to wash his private parts. Then he would perform wudu' (ablution) as for prayer. Next, he would run his fingers through the roots of his hair and pour three handfuls of water over his head. After that, he would pour water over his entire body, and finally wash his feet. He used to perform ghusl for four reasons: janabah, on Friday, after cupping, and after washing the deceased. He encouraged ghusl on Friday, saying: "It is a duty owed to Allah by every Muslim to bathe once every seven days, washing his head and his body."
