What is the ruling on poetic verses that contain exaggeration in praising the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), such as: "O noblest of creation, O best refuge for us, if Hell blazes with infidels. We are constricted by what has terrified us, so has help from you drawn near, for everyone is in need? If you do not help us in important matters, then by whom, O Messenger of Allah, shall we be victorious? So, a swift raid, O saviour of creation, upon the enemies, so that fear and caution may vanish"?

The aforementioned poem about the birth of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, contains blameworthy exaggeration that amounts to polytheism (shirk (definition)) with Allah, along with linguistic weakness and flawed meter. The poem includes supplications to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, such as: "A supplicant calls upon you, hopeful and yearning, will he then be graced by the gaze of your kindness?" and "For we have no refuge save your presence, O best of creation, when danger looms great." And other verses that demonstrate seeking help from him. Supplicating to other than Allah Almighty, among the dead and the absent, is major polytheism (shirk akbar). The Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, is innocent of this, for he does not aid the distressed nor answer the desperate. Allah alone does that. Allah commanded him to declare that he possesses no power to benefit or harm himself, and that he has no say in the matter whatsoever. Allah alone answers the desperate and removes evil, and He is near, answering the call of the supplicant. Whoever makes angels and prophets intermediaries, calling upon them and asking them to bring benefits and avert harms, is a disbeliever by the consensus of Muslims. It has not been reported from the imams that they supplicated to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, or sought his forgiveness and intercession after his death.
