What is the ruling on some people's practice of sprinkling water on graves?

It is recommended to sprinkle water on the grave after burial to prevent the soil from scattering and to help it cohere. The jurists of the four madhhabs have mentioned the recommendation of this act, citing the Prophet's (peace be upon him) action of sprinkling water on the graves of some Companions and his son Ibrahim. Al-Albani authenticated a strong hadith regarding the Prophet's sprinkling water on his son's grave. However, the belief that sprinkling water benefits the deceased is false, as its purpose is for the cohesion of the soil, not for cooling or benefiting the deceased.
