What is the ruling on sprinkling water on a grave and placing grains upon it for birds to eat when visiting graveyards?

Visiting graves is commendable as it serves as a reminder of the Hereafter, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "I had forbidden you from visiting graves, so visit them, for they remind one of the Hereafter." The visitor must avoid polytheism (shirk), innovations (bid'ah), newly invented matters, and vain talk. Sprinkling water on the grave and placing grains on it for birds to eat has no basis in religion; it is among the newly invented matters that do not benefit the deceased. Rather, what benefits the deceased is supplication (du'a) and seeking forgiveness (istighfar).
