Does focusing on studying and neglecting supererogatory acts this year, in order to achieve a high score that leads to admission to the desired college, cause one to lose God's facilitation and success in studies, especially given that studying (knowledge) is an obligation? And what should be done during Ramadan and the last ten nights: should the nights be spent in the obligatory act (seeking knowledge) or in supererogatory acts of worship?

A Muslim is only obligated to perform the five daily prayers. There is no sin in refraining from supererogatory (nafl) prayers, but one misses out on immense reward. It is possible to combine study with acts of worship through the supererogatory prayers that compensate for any deficiencies in the obligatory ones. One should be wary of self-deception and the whisperings of Satan. Studying with a good intention, as an act of obedience, earns reward for its doer, and combining acts of obedience is preferable. Seeking religious knowledge is an individual obligation (fard ‘ayn), while worldly sciences may be a communal obligation (fard kifayah). One should balance various duties, increase acts of worship during the last ten nights of Ramadan, and seek Allah's help to achieve blessings in time and to combine purposes.
