What should a 45-year-old unemployed man with four children do when his mother, whose parents possess sufficient means to help all their children, asks him to vacate the apartment he rents from her due to irregular rent payments, and tells him to go to the Zakat fund, knowing that his mother owns other properties but refuses to sell them to help him? And does Islamic law command parents to help their needy children?

A father is obligated to financially support his children until they reach puberty and are able to earn a living. After puberty, the obligation of financial support continues if the son is poor, according to the Hanbalis, and this is what the majority of jurists have adopted, contrary to Abu Hanifa, Malik, and the Shafi'is, who believe there is no obligation of financial support after puberty if the child is healthy and able to earn. If the father has no money, the financial responsibility transfers to the capable mother.
