Is a person held accountable for what he writes—such as messages and the like—but does not utter, by analogy with the noble verse: "He does not utter any word except that with him is an observer, ready [to record]?"

Everything a person does, believes, or says is recorded and preserved with Allah; nothing of it is hidden from Him. This is indicated by many Quranic verses that affirm that angels preserve and record the deeds of people, and that a person will find his deeds recorded before him on the Day of Resurrection. The people of Islam have agreed upon this matter. Writing is an action, and a person will be held accountable for his actions. Therefore, a person must fear Allah in what he writes.
