The question

What is the ruling on delaying the making up of missed Ramadan fasts for several Ramadans without a valid excuse? Is it obligatory to feed a poor person for each day of missed fasting? Is it permissible to give the expiation to one poor person or more? Is it permissible to vary the type of food given for the expiation?

The answer

If you delayed making up your fasting days for several years, and you were aware of the prohibition of such delay, then you owe a fidyah (expiatory payment) for each day whose make-up was delayed. This fidyah is paid once for each day and does not multiply with the recurrence of Ramadans. However, if you were unaware of the prohibition of the delay, then no fidyah is due from you. It is permissible to give all the fidyah to one needy person, and it is permissible to distribute it from different types of food (such as rice, wheat, and dates), provided that it is from the staple food of the region or better. The amount of the fidyah is one mudd of food for each day, and it is given to the poor or the needy.
