What is the difference between self-admiration (ujb), boasting (fakhr), and arrogance/haughtiness (khuyala’)? Are these psychological or acquired ailments? And how can one know if they exist within them, what are the ways to get rid of them, and what is their punishment?

Ujb (self-admiration) is a person's intense delight in their own qualities. Its origin is self-admiration and the absence of witnessing God's grace and success. As for khuyala' (haughtiness), it is seeing oneself as superior to what one deserves and displaying grandeur to people. Fakhr (boasting) is showing off and mentioning one's virtues while preferring oneself over others. These traits are interconnected and intertwined, all stemming from kibr (arrogance). They often appear together in the Quran, as in the Almighty's saying: (Indeed, Allah does not like whoever is self-deluded and boastful). The punishment for these traits is severe. Whoever contends with Allah in arrogance, He will destroy him. The arrogant will be resurrected on the Day of Judgment like specks, overwhelmed by humiliation. The self-admirer may also be swallowed by the earth.

To get rid of these blights, several methods can be followed: 1. Seeking guidance from a learned and تربوي (educating) shaykh. 2. Listening to and accepting the advice of those who give counsel. 3. Reading books on ethics to recognize the traits of the arrogant and apply them to oneself. 4. Benefiting from the observations of enemies, which highlight one's flaws. 5. Mingling with people and learning from their mistakes to avoid them. 6. Seeing oneself as like other people, and that the true measure is piety. 7. Realizing that Allah's right is greater than one's deeds and that success comes from Him, the Exalted. 8. Increasing supplication, asking for guidance to the best of manners.
