What is the ruling on pausing at verses of punishment while reciting the Qur'an during prayer?

It is sunnah for the worshipper to seek refuge with Allah upon passing by a verse of punishment, and to ask for mercy upon passing by a verse of mercy, according to the majority of scholars. They base this on the hadith narrated by Hudhayfah in Sahih Muslim, that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) "if he passed by a verse containing glorification, he would glorify (Allah), and if he passed by a verse of supplication, he would supplicate, and if he passed by a verse of seeking refuge, he would seek refuge." Imam Shafi'i and his companions hold that this is recommended for the reciter both inside and outside of prayer, for the Imam, the follower, and the one praying alone, and in both obligatory and supererogatory prayers. Some scholars restrict this recommendation to supererogatory prayers, while others hold that it applies to both obligatory and supererogatory prayers. Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen holds that it is sunnah for the reciter to do this in night prayers. As for the follower, it is better for them to listen attentively, unless the Imam pauses at the end of a verse.
