What is the ruling on the follower repeating the Qur’an with the Imam, and the ruling on seeking refuge from the Fire and asking for Paradise when the Imam passes by verses of punishment and bliss?

If the intention is to recite what the Imam recites, then if it is the Fatiha, it is permissible to recite it behind the Imam during his pauses, because it is a pillar (rukn), and this is the relied-upon opinion. As for other than the Fatiha, it is obligatory to listen attentively to the Imam's recitation in the audible prayers, due to the Almighty's saying: {And when the Qur'an is recited, listen to it and pay attention that you may receive mercy}, except for the Fatiha according to some scholars. It is legislated for the congregant to correct the Imam if he makes a mistake, provided he knows the verse, but it is not permissible to take the Mus'haf and read behind the Imam to correct him. As for seeking refuge from hell at the verses of punishment and asking for Paradise at the verses of bliss, this is recommended for every worshiper.
