What is the ruling regarding a young man who sits with a mixed group of young men and women at the university, under the pretext of friendship, engaging in religious and social discussions and listening to the Quran, but with the presence of some inappropriate talk and the playing of music sometimes, and gathering in public places after university, exchanging phone numbers, and the young man giving the girl a ride, and the resulting societal perception and family problems?

For a man to take a woman who is a stranger to him as a friend or mistress is forbidden and among the gravest of abominations prohibited by Islamic law. These friendships have caused great corruption and led their participants to violate the sacred limits of Allah, as the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "I have not left behind me any trial more harmful to men than women." Allah commanded the companions of the Prophet to ask the Mothers of the Believers from behind a screen, explaining that this is purer for the hearts of both parties, and this applies to other women as well. The basic principle for a man addressing a strange woman is that it should be only out of necessity, from behind a screen, and should not involve softness in speech or private seclusion (khalwa). Any relationship that does not meet these controls is impermissible. The family's knowledge of such relationships does not change their prohibition; rather, it is considered dayyatha (pimping/cuckoldry), concerning which a Prophetic hadith states: "Three types of people Allah Almighty will not look at on the Day of Resurrection: the one who disobeys his parents, the woman who imitates men, and the dayyooth."
