If the Imam is illiterate and cannot recite Al-Fatiha properly, or makes a mistake that changes the meaning, or replaces one letter with another; then, according to the majority of scholars, it is not permissible to pray behind him. Whoever has prayed behind such an Imam must repeat their prayer, unless the follower is like his Imam, in which case his imamate over someone like him is valid. It is not a condition for the validity of the prayer that the reciter be proficient in tajwid.
