What is the ruling on drinking "Yasin water" for healing from illnesses, and how does a Muslim overcome despair and frustration?
We advise patience in times of tribulation and affliction, for patience is the key to relief. We recall Allah’s wisdom in all His commands, and that this world is a realm of trials and tests, as Allah Almighty says: "And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient." A believer remembers Allah’s mercy and does not despair; he reflects on the trials of others to realize that patience is inevitable, so the patience of contentment is better than the patience of compulsion. This does not preclude seeking help through lawful Ruqyah, for the Quran is a healing and a mercy. However, singling out specific verses or surahs with particular numbers and timings for treating certain illnesses is not from the Sunnah and may be an innovation. As for drinking water over which Surat Ya-Sin has been recited, without believing in a special virtue for it, there is no harm in that. Nevertheless, it is better to perform Ruqyah with what has been authentically established in Islamic law, such as Al-Fatiha, Al-Mu'awwidhat (Surahs Al-Falaq and An-Nas), and Ayatul-Kursi.
