Is it permissible to bury the father with the mother in the same grave years after the mother's death, and will they be punished for that?

The basic principle is that it is not permissible to bury another deceased person in the same grave, neither with the first nor after them. It is also not permissible to open the grave and exhume it to bury another deceased person in it. This is because the place where a Muslim is buried becomes consecrated for them as long as any part of them remains in it, until it perishes.

However, if there is a necessity for it, then it is permissible, such as when there are many deaths and it is difficult to allocate a separate grave for each deceased person. In such a case, it is preferable for a woman to be buried with other women, and it is disliked for her to be buried with men. As for what has already been buried, we hope there is no sin upon the doer, and that the two deceased persons will not be tormented by it.
