Who is the person that was crucified instead of Jesus, peace be upon him? Was it the traitor who was made to resemble him, or one of Jesus's companions who sacrificed himself?

Revelation did not detail what happened on the day Jesus (peace be upon him) was made to resemble someone else. However, it is authentically reported from Ibn Abbas that the Messiah asked his companions: "Who among you will have my likeness cast upon him, be killed in my place, and be with me in my rank?" A young man stood up, the likeness of Jesus was cast upon him, and Jesus was raised to heaven. Ibn Kathir commented that this is an authentic chain of narration to Ibn Abbas. Ibn Jarir mentioned that the likeness was cast upon all of Jesus's companions, and this is reported in a narration from Wahb ibn Munabbih, although Ibn Kathir described this account as very strange. Some Christians claim that Judas Iscariot was the one made to resemble Jesus and whom they crucified. Ibn Kathir concluded by saying, "Allah knows best which of these occurred," and there is no great benefit in knowing this.
