Is there any evidence from the Qur’an or Sunnah that we fast so that we may feel with the poor?

Allah Almighty mentioned the wisdom behind the legislation of fasting in His saying: (so that you may become righteous). Righteousness (taqwa) is a comprehensive term for performing acts of obedience and refraining from prohibitions. Fasting is one of the greatest means of attaining righteousness because it trains the soul to be mindful of Allah and to abandon its desires as an act of drawing closer to Allah. It weakens the influence of Satan and encourages the fasting person to empathize with the destitute poor by experiencing the pain of hunger. Fasting reminds the rich of the poor and calls upon them to show compassion. Thus, we fast as an act of worship to Allah and obedience to His Messenger, in order to achieve righteousness in our hearts.
