Good names should be chosen for children, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Indeed, you will be called on the Day of Resurrection by your names, so make your names good." It is a condition for the permissibility of naming with foreign names that their meaning does not contain any sharia prohibition, and that the name is not specific to disbelievers, as Ibn al-Qayyim explained that names specific to disbelievers are not permissible for Muslims to use, due to imitation of them. As for common names, it is permissible to use them. It is not within the purview of sharia scholars to know the meanings of foreign names and the extent of their specificity to disbelievers; rather, the reference for that is to those who have knowledge and expertise.
