Are recurring family misfortunes and tribulations caused by the sin of one of the family members, and are people punished for the sins of others, or are these merely trials from Allah?

If you have sexual inclinations towards males, you should take the initiative to address them and rid yourself of them. Seek help by understanding the ugliness of this matter according to Islamic law and natural disposition (fitra), and by consulting a trustworthy psychiatrist. Continue in obedience to Allah, and strive in supplication that He averts evil and indecency from you. The calamities that befall people are due to their sins. Allah the Almighty said: "And whatever strikes you of calamity – it is for what your hands have earned, and He pardons much." (Quran 42:30). The obligation when a tribulation descends is patience and submission to Allah’s decree, seeking refuge in Him, supplicating earnestly, praying, and drawing closer to Him through acts of worship. Allah does not punish anyone for the sin of another, but a general tribulation may descend as a purification and a raising of ranks, as in the hadith of Aisha concerning the army (that intended to attack the Kaaba). And whoever witnesses evil and does not condemn it, despite having the ability, is a partner in sin with its perpetrator.
