How does a Muslim avoid earning unlawful money when getting married if his salary is modest?
We advise the questioner to supplicate to Allah to turn him away from consuming the unlawful, and to be certain that Allah will suffice him and enrich him. Indeed, Allah has guaranteed assistance to whoever seeks marriage for the sake of chastity. Allah, the Exalted, says: "And marry the unmarried among you and the righteous among your male slaves and female slaves. If they should be poor, Allah will enrich them from His bounty, and Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing." (An-Nur: 32). It is narrated in the Hadith: "Three are rightfully aided by Allah: the one who strives in the way of Allah, the indentured slave who desires to pay off his freedom, and the one who marries desiring chastity." Unlawful wealth is devoid of blessing, and whoever abandons something for the sake of Allah, Allah will compensate him with something better, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Indeed, you will not abandon anything for the sake of Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, except that Allah will give you something better than it." We also advise him to be economical in marriage expenses.
