A husband must treat his wife well. If the wife is harmed by his ill-manners, she is permitted to seek divorce, but patience and supplicating for his guidance are more befitting. A wife is not permitted to leave her husband’s house without his permission, unless there is a legitimate excuse; otherwise, she is considered disobedient (nashiz) and loses her right to maintenance. Suicide is forbidden in Islamic law and results in the loss of this world and the Hereafter. A husband is not legally obligated to take his wife to her family, and the husband’s brother is a non-mahram (definition) to her, so she is not permitted to ride with him alone. A husband divorcing his wife during a period of purity in which he had intercourse with her is considered an innovated divorce (talaq (definition) bid'i) and is valid according to the most prevalent opinion. Understanding should prevail between spouses, and each should overlook the other’s slip-ups. Smoking is forbidden, and its user should be advised.
