Does the practice of masturbation—while feeling remorse afterwards and desiring to stop—necessitate divine punishment, and what is your legal (Shar'i) guidance regarding this matter?

The practice of masturbation is forbidden for Muslim men and women. No one is excused for committing sins under the pretext of lust. Allah commanded believing men and women to lower their gaze and guard their private parts, except from their spouses; anything beyond that is aggression. Among the best ways to deter sin is to remember its consequences and to be mindful of Allah's constant observation. Among what weakens lust and helps prevent wrong practices is fasting, as the Prophet, peace be upon him, guided, saying: "O young people, whoever among you can afford to marry, let him do so, for it is more effective in guarding the private parts and lowering the gaze. And whoever cannot afford it, then let him fast, for it will be a shield for him." The questioner must repent and stop masturbating, seeking help from Allah and through fasting, as its continuation may deprive her of the blessing of marriage and offspring.
