The answer

The scholars have stated that essential professions, such as tailoring, baking, and others upon which the well-being of the general populace depends, are considered communal obligations (fard kifayah). Any academic specialization that benefits the Ummah in worldly matters is also a communal obligation. The Ummah needs specialized doctors in all diseases and expert specialists in technology. However, comparing medicine and technology to determine which the Ummah needs more is not within the purview of the Fatwa Center.
