Can you explain to me the meaning of Allah's name Al-Haleem?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The name "Al-Haleem" (The Forbearing) is mentioned in the Quran in several places. Ibn Jarir stated that its meaning is "one who is patient, who does not hasten to avenge himself upon those who disobey Him." Al-Khattabi said: "He is the one who pardons and is patient, whom anger does not provoke, nor does ignorance make Him reckless. He is the one who pardons despite His power, and the deliberate one who does not hasten punishment." Al-Asbahani clarified that Allah's forbearance is eternal and does not cease; He is forbearing despite His power, unlike the forbearance of creatures which changes and ceases. Ibn Al-Qayyim mentioned that Allah is Forbearing; He does not hasten punishment upon His servant so that they may repent. Al-Sa'di said that He bestows blessings upon His creation despite their many transgressions, giving them respite to repent.
