What is the authenticity of the Hadith of Ibn Abbas concerning the story of Adam's creation, and did the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say it, the text of which is: "So Allah created him with His Hand, so that Iblis would not be arrogant towards him. Then He created him as a human, and he was a body of clay for forty years, for the duration of a Friday. The angels passed by him and were frightened by what they saw of him, and the most terrified of them was Iblis. He used to pass by him and strike him, and the body would make a sound like pottery, having a clanking sound, and he would say: 'For a certain matter was I created.' And he entered from his mouth and exited from his rear"?

The story of Adam's creation mentioned in the question was narrated by Al-Tabari from Ibn Abbas and Ibn Mas'ud, attributed to them and not as a statement of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. Al-Tabari doubted the authenticity of its chain of narration. Sheikh Ahmad Shakir pointed out that Al-Tabari did not explain the reason for his doubt despite narrating it frequently.

As for the authentic account of Adam's creation, it is what Muslim narrated from Anas that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "When Allah fashioned Adam in Paradise, He left him for as long as He willed. Then Iblis began to circle around him, looking at what he was. When he saw that he was hollow, he knew that he was a creature that could not control himself." Al-Nawawi explained: "Yuteefu bihi" means to circle around him. "Ajwaf" means having a hollow inside or an empty interior. "La yatamalak" means he cannot control himself and restrain himself from desires, or he cannot repel whispers, or he cannot control himself when angry, and what is meant is mankind in general.
