Is the hadith: "Do not write anything from me, and whoever has written anything other than the Qur’an, let him erase it," authentic, and what is its meaning?
The Salaf differed concerning the writing down of knowledge, then Muslims reached a consensus on its permissibility. They differed regarding the meaning of the hadith prohibiting writing. It was said that it was specific to those whose memorization could be trusted, or that the prohibition was abrogated by the hadiths that permit writing, and that the prohibition was at a time when there was fear of its mixing with the Quran, or that the prohibition was against writing hadith with the Quran on a single page. It is understood from the hadith of Abu Shah that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, permitted the writing down of hadith. Ibn Hajar reconciled this with the hadith of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri by saying that the prohibition was specific to the time of the Quran's revelation, or that the prohibition was against writing anything other than the Quran with the Quran in one thing, or that the prohibition was earlier and the permission abrogated it, or that the prohibition was specific to those who were feared to rely solely on writing without memorization. Some Companions and Tabi'un disliked the writing down of hadith and preferred that it be taken from them through memorization. However, when efforts weakened and the imams feared the loss of knowledge, they recorded it.
