Lawful maintenance of a grave involves several things: placing a marker at the head, raising the grave about a handspan, and enclosing the graveyard with a fence to protect it. Unlawful maintenance, however, includes: raising the grave more than a handspan, building over graves, painting and plastering graves, enclosing a grave with its own private fence, writing on graves, and planting trees and plants on them. Lawful maintenance does not require spending large sums of money, while dust on a grave is not considered a desecration of it.
