What is your opinion regarding inclining towards tolerance and forgiveness for wrongdoers, especially in cases of adultery, and must an adulterous wife be divorced?
Our advice and guidance stem from our role as guides to goodness, righteousness, and repentance, not as authoritative bodies that punish criminals. We do not instruct ordinary individuals to implement the hudud punishments because they fall under the purview of the ruler or his deputy, in order to prevent greater problems. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was gentle with the repentant and strict with those from whom he feared wrongdoing, as a deterrence for people. We give glad tidings to the repentant of the opening of the door of repentance and remind them of the means to rid themselves of sin. We also remind the husband not to kill his adulterous wife, and we call upon him to cover her if she repents, or warn him against dayouthah (pimping/cuckoldry) if she persists.
