The answer

Working to determine usurious interest is forbidden, based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "The Messenger of Allah cursed the one who consumes Riba (usury), the one who feeds it, its scribe, and its two witnesses, and he said: 'They are all equal (in sin).'" This work is even more severe than the work of a witness or a scribe.

As for the salary, if it is for work related to usurious deposits and loans, it is forbidden. However, if it is for permissible work – such as managing Islamic deposits and loans – then it is permissible. The Permanent Committee has stated: "If the bank is usurious, then any salary or bonus an employee receives as wages for their work in it is unlawful, due to their cooperation with the usurious bank owners in sin and transgression."

If you repent from working with usurious deposits and you were unaware of its prohibition, you are not required to dispose of the illicit salary, based on the verse: "So whoever receives an admonition from his Lord and desists, he may have what has already passed, and his affair is with Allah."

The blessings of wealth are removed by illicit money, and the difficulty in performing Umrah might be a trial from Allah. Therefore, hasten to leave this work, for if you do so out of fear of Allah, He will compensate you with something better.
