What is the ruling on my continuing to shave my beard despite this conflicting with university regulations and family pressures that could lead to my expulsion from studies?

To grow a beard is a religious obligation, following the example of the Prophet (peace be upon him). If there is pressure to shave it due to studies or family, one should first try to negotiate with the school administration, seek a mediator, file a complaint for violating personal freedoms, or look for an alternative school. If these attempts fail and the only options remaining are expulsion or shaving, then there is no harm in temporary shaving until the completion of studies, with the intention of growing it back afterwards. Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity. If it is possible to trim instead of shave, that is an easier option.
