What is the ruling on refraining from having children with a wife who smokes, does not wear the hijab, goes out with her mother without permission, neglects her household duties under the pretext of studying, sometimes refuses intimacy under the pretext of tiredness, and refuses to obey her husband's prohibition of these matters? And what is the ruling on divorcing her for fear that she may harm herself when angry?

It is permissible to prevent conception for fear that the children might be corrupted by the mother. The husband is responsible for his wife and must prevent her from unlawful acts and discipline her. If admonition, abandonment, and light beating do not work, then it is better to separate from her. Divorce becomes recommended or obligatory when the wife neglects the rights of Allah. As for a man divorcing his wife for fear that she might harm herself, it is valid, unless he strongly believes that she will cause great harm to herself or others and he is unable to prevent her; in this case, the divorce is not valid.
