The answer

Linguistically, naʿy (announcement of death) means to inform of a person's death and make it public, along with any accompanying enumeration of their virtues.

It is of two types:

1. Naʿy solely for the purpose of announcing the death: This is permissible. A group of scholars has deemed it desirable for the purpose of performing the funeral prayer for the deceased, supplicating for them, following their funeral procession, or for any valid purpose, such as informing relatives and friends.

2. Naʿy accompanied by calling out, raising the voice, and enumerating virtues: This is prohibited, as it resembles the naʿy of the pre-Islamic era (Jahiliyyah), which involved mentioning boasts, loud shouting, and going around to houses and markets.

The majority of scholars have cited the permissibility of announcing death based on the following : - The Prophet (peace be upon him) announced the death of An-Najashi in order to pray for him. - The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, upon being informed of the death of the woman who used to clean the mosque, "Why did you not inform me?" - The Prophet (peace be upon him) announced the deaths of Zayd, Jaʿfar, and Ibn Rawahah (may Allah be pleased with them) before news of their deaths reached them.

The Hadith that prohibit naʿy are interpreted as referring to the naʿy of Jahiliyyah, in order to reconcile between the different Hadith.

The majority of scholars dislike calling out when announcing a death. However, a group of Hanafis holds that it is not disliked if it is merely a call devoid of mentioning boasts, for the purpose of increasing the number of those who pray for and seek forgiveness for the deceased.
