What is the ruling on eating a hedgehog for medicinal purposes?

The jurists differed on eating the hedgehog: The Hanbalis forbade it due to its impurity, citing the verse "and prohibits for them impurities" and a weak hadith from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Malik and Abu Hanifa disliked it. Al-Shafi'i, Al-Layth, and Abu Thawr permitted it. The preponderant opinion is that it is permissible to eat it because the basic principle is permissibility, and no evidence of prohibition has been established. However, refraining from eating it is more prudent to avoid disagreement, and there is no objection to eating it for medicinal purposes.
