Must I make up the prayers I missed over 10 years, knowing that I missed them out of laziness and not disbelief? Is it permissible to combine prayers out of necessity, such as for studying and working, taking into account that scholars emphasize performing prayers on time except when traveling or sleeping? Is work considered as difficult as travel?

Prayer is a mighty pillar of Islam, and Allah has warned those who abandon it of woe and loss. The one who abandons prayer out of laziness is, according to the preponderant opinion, a disbeliever. According to the majority of scholars, he is committing a grave sin, and he must make up all missed prayers immediately, to the best of his ability. Travel permits combining prayers that share a time (Dhuhr with Asr, and Maghrib with Isha), but Asr and Maghrib cannot be combined. Being preoccupied with work may permit combining two prayers if it is not a continuous habit. The one who abandons prayer must offer sincere repentance and observe prayers on time, in congregation if possible, knowing that work is not an excuse for neglecting its performance. For Allah accepts the repentance of sinners if they purify their intention and fulfill the conditions of repentance.
