Is the name "Sharif" inherently disliked, or is it due to the commendation it carries? And is it advisable to change it if it is disliked? The name "Shareef" is not among the disliked names that imply self-praise; rather, it is permissible. Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen clarified that names which denote self-praise are acceptable if a person is named with them merely as a designation, and they should be changed if the meaning of self-praise is noted within them.

The best names are "Abdullah" and "Abdur-Rahman," based on the saying of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him: "Indeed, the most beloved of your names to Allah are Abdullah and Abdur-Rahman."

If a name is disliked but not forbidden, then it is not permissible for the son to defy his parents in changing it, unless they consent, or if the name causes harm to the son.
