What is the authenticity of the hadith: "Every soul from the children of Adam is a master (sayyid): the man is the master (sayyid) of his family, and the woman is the mistress (sayyidah) of her house"? Does it indicate that the man is the master of his family outside the home and the woman is the mistress of her house, and that her mastery within the home includes the man? Does this contradict qawamah (guardianship/maintenance)? And does qawamah have regulations? Is it permissible to address a Christian with the title "Sayyid" (Mr./Master)?

A man is the master of his household, and a woman is the mistress of her home. A man has guardianship (qawamah) and authority over the house and its occupants, a responsibility for which he will be questioned on the Day of Judgment. His guardianship is not absolute but is constrained by legitimate Islamic guidelines, such as treating his wife kindly, fulfilling his duties, and disciplining his wife without transgression. As for the woman, her mastery is relative over her children and servants, and it is also a responsibility. It is not permissible to address disbelievers and hypocrites with the title "Sayyid" (master) out of reverence and glorification, unless it is for the purpose of inclining their hearts towards Islam, or to describe him as the sayyid of his people, and not as an absolute sayyid.
