What is the ruling on someone who swore to himself, saying: "Divorce be upon me if I do anything wrong," intending by this to stop a specific action that he repeatedly committed?

The fatwa adopted by us regarding the ruling on swearing by divorce and making it conditional on an event is that divorce occurs unequivocally upon the breach of the condition. It is not a prerequisite for its occurrence that you swore in front of your wife; rather, the oath is enacted simply by your uttering it. However, if you intended that you swore to yourself without uttering it, then your divorce does not occur. It must be noted that swearing by divorce is among the oaths of the dissolute, and it may lead to undesirable consequences.
