Is it true that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, wanted to take off his sandals on the night of the Mi'raj, and he was called out to: "Why are you taking off your sandals?" So he replied: "My God, I feared the consequence of expulsion and the bitterness of rejection, and that it would be said to me what was said to my brother Musa." Then he was called out to: "O Muhammad, if Musa desired, then you are the desired one; and if Musa loved, then you are the beloved one; and if Musa sought, then you are the sought one. You are the near one, and you are the beloved one. Ask Me what you love, for I am All-Hearing, All-Responding." So the Messenger said: "My God, I do not ask You for Aminah who gave birth to me, nor Halimah who nursed me, nor Fatimah my daughter, but rather I ask You for my Ummah." So it was said to him: "O Prophet of Mercy, how compassionate you are towards this Ummah! Your Ummah is a weak creation, and I am a Gentle Lord, and you are a noble Prophet. The weak will not be lost between the Gentle and the Noble. So by My might and glory, I will divide the Day of Resurrection between Us into two halves: you will say: 'My Ummah! My Ummah!' and I will say: 'My Mercy! My Mercy!'"?
The circulated report that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, wanted to take off his sandals on the night of the Mi'raj when he was at the Throne, in imitation of Moses, peace be upon him, and that he was called upon not to take off his sandals because the Throne was honored by his arrival with them on, is a baseless and fabricated report. None of the scholars mentioned it in the story of the Mi'raj, and it is a lie against the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and against Allah Almighty. Scholars have explicitly stated that this entire story is fabricated and that it has not been authentically reported in any of the narrations of the Mi'raj that the Prophet was wearing sandals or that he ascended to the Throne.
