How can one reconcile the divine command to convey the message in the verse: (O Messenger! Proclaim that which has been sent down to you from your Lord; and if you do not do so, then you have not conveyed His message. And Allah will protect you from the people. Indeed, Allah does not guide the disbelieving people) Al-Ma'idah / 67, with the Prophet's (peace be upon him) prohibition to Mu'adh ibn Jabal from giving glad tidings to the people in the hadith: "Do not give them glad tidings, lest they rely on it"?

The scholars have mentioned several ways to reconcile between the verse and the hadith:

Firstly: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did not conceal the matter. Rather, he informed Mu'adh of it, and he prevented its dissemination to some people out of fear that they would rely on the good tidings and abandon good deeds. Secondly: His command, peace and blessings be upon him, to conceal it was not absolute or perpetual. Rather, it was restricted to a specific time. Mu'adh informed others of it before his death to avoid the sin of concealing knowledge, because he understood that the prohibition was restricted to a specific state or time, and that restriction had been lifted. Thirdly: It is possible that the prohibition against giving good tidings was specific to those from whom reliance (on the good tidings) and abandonment of deeds were feared. So, Mu'adh informed those who were not feared to do so, and when the restriction of reliance was removed, the prohibition was also removed.
