How authentic is the attribution to Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) of the saying: "Do not raise your children as your fathers raised you, for they have been created for a time other than your time"?

This statement was not attributed to Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him. Rather, it was attributed to Socrates or Plato with the wording: "Do not force your children to follow in your footsteps, for they were created for a time other than your time." Its meaning can be understood as not compelling children to adopt virtues that are not religiously obligatory, while considering the changes of time. As for morally obligatory behaviors in Islam, parents must compel their children to adhere to them regardless of the passage of time. The virtues of Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, are well-known and famous. The people of innovation exploited the Muslims' love for him to spread their lies, but the Ahl al-Sunnah countered them and exposed their falsehood.
