Is my mother's action of giving me bank interest to get rid of it Islamically permissible, and is my action of using this interest to pay taxes or buy phone cards, without buying food, clothes, or drink, Islamically permissible?
It is not permissible for the mother to deposit her money in an interest-based bank, and she must repent and withdraw her funds immediately. As for the usurious gains (interest), she must dispose of them by spending them on the welfare of Muslims, such as the poor, the needy, and charitable hospitals. If the son is poor, it is permissible for the mother to give him these gains as a way of disposing of them, and the son may use them in a permissible manner. However, if he is not poor, it is not permissible for the mother to give him these gains; rather, they must be given to those who are deserving. Their use for taxes or phone cards does not affect this ruling, and he is not permitted to own them or benefit from them as long as he does not meet the description of being deserving.
